Motherhood is...

Mother’s Day has come and gone. We got up again today. We choose daily to pour ourselves out and into our children. As we drink our reheated coffee and wait for the clothes to run through another re-fluff cycle, (because maybe we will fold them this time when they’re done...) our minds drift to thoughts about motherhood-

Motherhood is thinking you’ll never sleep again, but you’d do it 4 times over in a heartbeat.
Motherhood is folding a fresh pile of laundry and finding it hidden under a bed after they’ve “put it away”.
Motherhood is 4am wake up calls with requests for you to turn on the light so they can use the bathroom, or get a drink of water, or help them find a missing blankie.
Motherhood is wondering if the sibling rivalry will ever stop-he looked out MY window, she touched MY spot on the floor, they won’t stop breathing in my space...
Motherhood is your adventurous two year old letting himself outside and uprooting the fresh flowers you just planted-only to bring them to you with a smile.
Motherhood is wondering if you’ve given them too much freedom when you let them ride around the block on their bikes, but they decided to dip into the next neighborhood “on the way home”. But they were late because their legs were just too tired to pedal anymore...
Motherhood is whispering “What have we done?” at least once a day to your spouse.
Whatever your motherhood is-I’ll put money on the fact that we can all agree on one thing-motherhood is hard. Motherhood is the hardest, best thing that has ever happened to us.
Let’s not lose sight that while motherhood is so stinkin’ hard (sometimes- a lot of the time), one day our houses will be quiet. No one will be wiping their noses or hands on us. We will be able to have a complete thought. And we’ll miss this. So let’s keep pouring into these little humans. One day they may feel the weight of this unconditional love. Until then, we will keep waking up before our alarms and reheating our coffee to the glory of God.
